Antwerp Planes: A Font for Vintage Vibe and Modern Branding

I’ve been working on a branding project for a small café that wants to evoke nostalgia and a touch of history. The owner mentioned they wanted something that feels like it came from the past but still works in today’s design world. That’s where Antwerp Planes came into play. Inspired by lettering from a WWII map of army movements, this font has a unique character that immediately caught my eye.

A Typographic Time Machine

When I first saw Antwerp Planes, I was struck by its retro feel. It’s not just a font—it’s a visual story. The thick, bold strokes and slightly irregular shapes give it a handcrafted look, as if it were drawn with a pencil and then inked. It’s reminiscent of old military documents, which made me think about how it could fit into a brand that wants to tell a story through its visuals.

I started by testing it on a logo draft. The café’s name is short, so I needed something strong and memorable. Antwerp Planes worked perfectly. Its weight and structure made the name stand out without being too overwhelming. It felt like the right balance between vintage charm and modern readability.

From Logo to Brand Identity

As I developed the brand identity, I used Antwerp Planes for the main headline in all visual assets. It looked great on the café’s signage, business cards, and even on their website header. But I also considered how it would work in different contexts. For example, I paired it with a clean sans-serif font for body text, ensuring good contrast and legibility.

The font’s personality really shone through in the packaging design. I used it on the front label of their coffee mugs and jars. It added a sense of authenticity that aligned with the café’s mission to offer quality, artisanal products. The same font also worked well on social media graphics, where it stood out against minimalist backgrounds.

I found that Antwerp Planes is best suited as a display font or headline font. It’s not ideal for long blocks of text, but it excels in short-form content like logos, headlines, and labels. That makes it perfect for a brand that wants to make an impact quickly without sacrificing style.

Testing the Waters Before Committing

Before using Antwerp Planes in the full brand system, I did some quick tests. I printed mockups of the café’s logo on different materials—cardstock, paper, and even fabric—to see how it held up. I also checked how it looked on screen at various sizes, from a tiny icon to a large banner. This helped me ensure it would be consistent across all platforms.

I also thought about font pairing. Since Antwerp Planes is a display typeface, I paired it with a modern sans-serif font for supporting text. This created a nice contrast that kept the design balanced. I experimented with a few options before settling on a pair that felt cohesive and professional.

Another thing I considered was commercial font licensing. The font comes with several styles, including alternates and ligatures, which gave me more flexibility. I also checked for multilingual support, which was important since the café serves a diverse customer base.

Real-World Applications

Using Antwerp Planes in the café’s branding opened up a lot of creative possibilities. It worked well on promotional flyers, event posters, and even Instagram stories. The font’s distinctive style made the brand more memorable and helped it stand out in a crowded market.

I also used it for product labels and packaging. It added a vintage touch that complemented the café’s aesthetic while still feeling relevant. The font’s strength and clarity made it easy to read from a distance, which is important for both online and physical displays.

One of my favorite uses was on the café’s website hero section. The bold, commanding presence of Antwerp Planes immediately drew visitors in, making the site feel more engaging and authentic.

Designing with Purpose

Working with Antwerp Planes reminded me of the importance of choosing fonts that align with a brand’s values and goals. This font isn’t just about looks—it’s about storytelling. It adds a layer of history and character that can deepen a brand’s connection with its audience.

It’s also a great reminder that typography plays a key role in brand perception. A font like Antwerp Planes can elevate a design from ordinary to extraordinary. It helps create a visual identity that’s both unique and meaningful.

If you’re working on a branding project and looking for a font that combines vintage charm with modern versatility, Antwerp Planes is definitely worth considering. Just remember to test it thoroughly and pair it wisely to maintain readability and consistency across all your design assets.
